Here in the States, the weather is cold and, in some places, ice and snow are already creating havoc. Across the pond and eastward awaits a warm, picturesque land filled with charming people. Uganda, located in East Africa, hails natural beauty and diverse cultural experiences.
Uganda is known as the Pearl of Africa. Winston Churchill first cited its description in his book published in 1908 titled My African Journey. The sentiment still holds true today. In Churchill’s book, he referenced Uganda’s magnificent colors, wildlife, and vegetation, among other things.
Located on the equator, Uganda’s unique environmental attributes stem from a moderate climate, and God’s generous creativity.
You are Uganda
You are Uganda,
The pearl of Africa.
Gifted no doubt by God,
Beauty beyond compare.
The moon lights up your valleys,
The lakes your well-oiled orchards,
Our peace you faithfully guard.
The hills bear fruit for us,
To share with one another.

To clarify the relevance of this poem, here are five interesting facts about Uganda that will make you want to visit yourself:
1. Geography & Natural Resources
Uganda borders five countries – Kenya, South Sudan, Tanzania, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
In our opinion, the #1 reason to visit Uganda is to take in the natural splendor. Although the country does not border an ocean, 26% of the land is covered with water. The rivers, waterfalls, and lakes are plentiful. Among its finest is Lake Victoria, the 2nd largest freshwater lake in the world. Uganda sources the Nile River, the longest river in the world.
Fertile land is another attractive resource. Uganda uses 70% of its land for agricultural purposes. Primary exports include coffee, tea, crude oil, flowers, and cotton. Uganda is the second largest banana producer worldwide.
2. Attractions
Wildlife is plentiful in Uganda. There are 10 national parks, abundant forests, mountains, and the Great Rift Valley. The majestic land is home to splendid creatures. During your visit, don’t be surprised to see giraffes, elephants, buffalos, and hippopotamuses. In the mountains, you might see endangered mountain gorillas. The national bird is the amusing Grey Crowned Crane.
3. Population & Economics
With 45 million residents, Uganda is one of the fastest-growing and most densely populated countries. It is the most youthful country with an average age of 15½. The average Ugandan mother will give birth to over five babies.
Sadly, Uganda is one of the poorest countries.
4. Cultural Diversity, Religion, & Language
Uganda bears the friendliest people in Africa. They value relationships and modesty. Women cover their legs with full-length skirts and pants to avoid being mistaken as prostitutes.
The dominant religion of 80% is Christian (protestant & Catholic) and 14% of the population is Muslim.
The official languages are English and Swahili. There are many other languages spoken, including Luganda. If you want to impress a native try to learn these phrases in Luganda:
Hi: Ki Kati
How are you: Oli Otya
Goodbye: Weeraba
5. Bird Watching
We saved the birds for last since they are a national treasure. Uganda is a top destination in Africa for birding. With 11% of the world’s birds as residents, there are over 1000 species of birds on record in Uganda.
It is worth mentioning that up to 8% of the world’s butterflies are found in Uganda.
We hope you consider adventuring to fascinating Uganda. If you do, be ready to be offered fried grasshoppers, a national delicacy.
