What if I told you that your event will be a hit if you go to sleep? Interested? In our sleep-deprived culture, so many of us fail to be productive for the sake of getting more done. Sleep Specialist Dr. Matthew Carter explains, "You're able to get more done on a good night's sleep, not less."
Whether you're planning a corporate event or a small wedding, the key to its success depends on you being at your best. Here are 5 steps to make your event go smoothly.
1. Sleep
You are most creative, most inspiring, and most effective when you are well-rested and sharp. For most of us, that means going to bed earlier (walk away from that binge-worthy series), and abiding by a nutritional diet. Although this seems elementary, most adults suffer from sleep deprivation and poor eating habits.
When it's time to sleep, devise a method of unloading your burdens before you hit the pillow. Journal, pray, make a list, talk out the concerns on your heart, and then put them to bed for the night. Wind down. That means unplugging and seeking tranquility.
2. Boundaries
Why do we think we can conquer our tasks without taking mental and physical breaks? Henry Cloud, author of Boundaries tells us that "Boundaries help us keep the good in and the bad out." Say no to things that clutter up your time and energy. Even the best-intended activities are not always the best course of action.
It just might be someone else's turn to say yes. Just because you do it best, doesn't mean you need to do it all. Delegate some of the load to people who enjoy helping. We all have different gifts and talents to offer. Someone who is skillfully gifted in research might happily assist with phone calls and search queries. A creative friend or co-worker might surprise you with budget-friendly decorating ideas.
3. Exercise
In the midst of the planning, schedule regular time for your physical well-being. Take a walk. Ride a bike. Hike a trail. Go for a swim. Not only will it improve your physical health, but it will also stimulate brain function and emotional welfare. While exercise is essential, outdoor exercise provides added benefits. Fresh air can invigorate the mind and body. Participating in the wonder of nature boosts our creativity, especially when we engage all of our senses.
4. Strategize
Before you launch in, lay out the master plan. Having a plan and mapping it out will unpack all those thoughts and concerns spinning around in your head. Go ahead and make it messy at first. Once you convert your thoughts to your computer (or paper), you are free to organize and prioritize. There are plenty of free apps to think of everything you'll need to consider. We love clickup.com and smartsheet.com.
5. Focus
When it's time to work, work hard. Be reliable and show up early to appointments. When possible, put down your phone and avoid interruptions. Set your watch and lose yourself to creating and executing your finest results. Just because you are working hard doesn't mean you shouldn't have fun, laugh, and enjoy the process. Play upbeat music, relish your favorite Starbucks' seasonal latte. Enlist encouraging partners and brainstorm all the wonderful possibilities.
