What’s not to love about fall? Food is flavorful. Hot apple cider and pumpkin spice lattes abound. The temperature cools and the scenery glistens with vivid intensity. The fashionable clothes come out of the closet. We gain an extra hour of sleep. There’s another reason we love autumn. In autumn, art is all around and can literally fall in our laps. Fall yields the creation of beautiful art. Here’s why we just can’t get enough of this delicious season! Shades of Autumn
The colors of autumn are warm and inviting. For artists, that means a myriad of possibilities in mixing rich colors to create unique masterpieces. Common fall colors include variations of red, yellow, orange, green, brown, and purple. Here are some favorite fall shades of these cozy colors.
Red – Burgundy, maroon, russet, scarlet, barn
Yellow – mustard, harvest, gold, honey, squash
Orange – amber, carrot, tangerine, pumpkin, flame
Green – olive, fern, forest, apple, sage
Brown – beige, chocolate, chestnut, umber, coffee
Purple – plum, mulberry, wine, eggplant, raisin
Autumn colors stir emotions. The lavish colors arouse observers to feel passion, cheerfulness, optimism, comfort, calmness, and decisiveness. Emotion is engrained in art. Wassily Kandinsky expressed it well, “Color is a power which directly influences the soul.”
It’s just a lot of fun to create when there are so many breathtaking colors to work with. Jump in and play with the colors that inspire you this season. Nature of Autumn
It’s arguably the best season to get out and immerse yourself in nature. Autumn is like a festival for the senses. The air is crisp, cooling off from the sweltering heat. The moon becomes brighter and lights the path for shimmering night walks. Hot apple pie, fresh from the orchard, smells like grandma’s kitchen. The sound of crackling logs on the outdoor firepit makes us want to gather around and savor a cup of butternut squash soup.
As the earth undergoes changes in autumn, nature puts on a show for those who want to watch. Here are three fall treasures of nature that are sure to inspire.
1. Leaves
Perhaps the most attractive aspect of fall is the brilliant, vibrant colors of changing leaves. The dreamy landscapes inspire us to engage in the earth’s beauty. Stunning views must be captured. Changing leaves affect deciduous trees and shrubs, giving us weeks of time to apply the phenomenon to a canvas, camera, craft, or journal. The artistic possibilities are endless. 2. Animals
In autumn, many animals busy themselves, gathering food in preparation for winter. They will eat extra portions in order to fatten themselves up for the coming cold weather, especially if they will be hibernating. They’re active throughout the days, particularly in the misty mornings.
We see plenty of squirrels, hedgehogs, foxes, deer, owls, chipmunks, and badgers scurrying about. Animals often grow winter coats and it is interesting to watch the fur thicken and change color, even on our domestic pets.
3. Harvest
Multiple crops are harvested in autumn. This creates opportunities for visual art, cooking, crafting, and experimenting. Here are some crops to watch for:
Apple orchards, carrots, tomatoes, beetroot, pumpkins, broccoli, cauliflower, beans, spinach, radishes, turnips, leaf lettuce, figs, grapes, grapefruit, mandarins, Swiss chard, cranberries, key limes, pears, pomegranates, kumquats, cabbage, brussels sprouts, celery, arugula, eggplant, squash, sweet potatoes, zucchini, chicories, wild mushrooms, collard greens, Florence fennel, endive, green beans, parsnips, kale, snow peas, onions, bell peppers, rutabagas, and kohlrabi.
