4 Tips on How to Create Stunning Autumn Art

Updated: Nov 3, 2023

Visual Art & Autumn

Visual art is a powerful vehicle for expressing your love of autumn. We love having fun with art. While there are many forms, here are four ideas we think are must-dos for fall.

1. Still Life

Practiced in the ancient world, still life continues to be a riveting expression of art. Contemporary, traditional, abstract, and trompe l’oeil are some of our preferred styles. Compose your drawing/painting focusing on radiant light, color, and form. While we know there are a number of harvested food and fall floral bouquets to use as your still life models, let’s consider other options.

Maybe a knitted scarf thrown next to a pile of school books would look pleasing. Perhaps the ingredients for pumpkin pie, next to a bright orange mixing bowl would impress. Even an abstract image of a basket of spilled acorns would make a delightful subject. Whether you’re a novice or expert, SkillShare has a variety of online educational classes, such as drawing & painting, to boost your skills. 2. Landscape Art

The quintessential method of sharing autumn’s charm is through colorful landscape art. A serene depiction of a scenic autumn setting can bring the outdoor feel indoors. A living space can become more ambient and appealing.

Landscapes can be abstract, surreal, or realistic. Seize the land, sea, or sky. You can initially apprehend your image with a photograph or sketch. You can also pack a picnic, easel, and acrylics to make an event out of it. As you create your compelling composition, take some deep breaths and enjoy the scenery. 3. Floral Arrangements

Whether dry, fresh or mixed, a colorful bouquet of fall flowers, greens, twigs, and berries can beautify your home. Autumn is the perfect time to decorate the interior and exterior of your home. Simple arrangements can lift moods and bring the holidays to the forefront.

Popular fresh, in-season flowers are chrysanthemums, lilies, daisies, roses, and sunflowers. Dried flowers can be added with fresh or you can create a separate arrangement of only dry that will last. Some catchy species are bunny tails, grapevine twigs, globe amaranth, floral & billy buttons, eucalyptus, and pampas grass. Try carving a pumpkin, placing a vase inside of it, and fill the vase with pretty fall foliage such as sunflowers, red and orange roses, and greens. A planted mum also works nicely. Fall flowers are particularly versatile as creative centerpieces. 4. Fall Photoshoot

Grab your camera, favorite model (canine or human) and scope out a charming setting for an autumn photo shoot. Because nature is busily changing, you won’t need to venture far to find an interesting setting. A backyard, park, walking trail or mountainous backdrop could all provide enchanting stages. Try using multiple locations to create picturesque memories.

As Vincent Van Gogh stated, “It is good to love many things, for therin lies the true strength, and whosoever loves much performs much, and can accomplish much, and what is done in love is well done.” Happy creating!
